Taiwan shares fall 300 points despite intervention

It was a tough day for investors on Monday, with the Taiex tumbling 300 points. Even vocal support from the Ma administration and intervention by the National Stabilization Fund were of little help. Leading the plunge were foreign investors, who performed their fifth-biggest selloff in history.

美国债信评等遭调降后第一天股市开盘，尽管马政府信心喊话，还有政府基金进场护盘，不过台股终场还是重挫3.82%，以7552点作收。外资在台股拚命倒货，卖超新台币315.13亿元，创下史上第5大卖超。

The market opened down and continued its slide throughout trading, at one point falling 400 points. That forced the government’s hand and the National Stabilization Fund leapt to the rescue. Nevertheless, the weighted index closed down 300.33 points, or 3.82 percent, at 7,552 points.

台股一路开低走低，盘中一度狂跌400点，虽然逼得政府基金进场拉抬，但终场指数还是大跌300.33点，收在7552点，跌幅3.82%。

At about 12:30 the weighted index had fallen 400 points. After that time the shadow of market protection could be seen. The action taken by the government’s stabilization fund is only enough to defend and support stock prices. There’s no effect that could cause prices to rise, so there’s nothing to get excited about.

“12点半当时指数大概是跌400点，12点半过后开始有些护盘的影子，目前来看政府基金在做护盘的动作，顶多充其量站在防守，只是站在支撑股价，但是没有助涨效果，所以目前看来没有很明显的，令人振奋的护盘效果”

Government funds were unlikely to be enough when foreign investors sold off a net NT$31.5 billion worth of Taiwanese shares. It was biggest single day selloff by foreign participants since the July 2007 U.S. housing crisis.

政府基金帮助不够，外资又卖超台股315亿，是美国2007年7月次贷风暴后，单日最大卖超纪录。

If there are signs of stabilization or if the falls stop in international markets, then the Taiwan market will have a speedy recovery after the fast decline. After a quick drop in prices, during the second half of the week we think there will be conditions for a quick rebound.

If the government fund is unable to hold up the index, then margin calls will increase selling pressure. Analysts suggested that investors wait until the signals from international markets are clearer before re-entering the market.

台股指数持续破底，国安基金再撑不住，接下来融资断头，卖压涌现，恐怕增添台股不利因素，分析师建议投资人，等国际情势明朗后，再进场！
